The logic of the gift in the development of a leader identity : the case of strategic managers of a French bank and a French energy company industry benefiting from leadership development programs.

The objective of this thesis is to show how the logic of the gift contributes to the development of a leader’s identity. The thesis is based on participant observation of four leadership development programs, facilitated by a coaching consultancy that works with companies in the consulting, manufacturing and banking sectors. We then conducted more than fifty interviews with managers and executives, including twenty-four biographical interviews with strategic managers of two CAC 40 companies in the banking sector and the energy industry. Qualitative categorized analysis of each leader’s life story shows how the logic of the gift is at work in the development of his or her identity. Thus, we discovered how the leader’s identity developed through “the habit of giving”, and through a personal commitment to a common project, a project that is also the result of what he or she has received in the past. This commitment is manifested in self-giving acts which, if experienced in a balanced dynamic of reciprocity and mutual recognition, generate the mutual commitment of collaborators. Thus, this self-giving if recognized as such, nurtures and confirms the identity of the “leader donator”. This finding goes against an individualistic logic which essentially recognizes personal skills and the ability to influence as foundations of the leader’s identity.
