During the symposium, Benjamin Pavageau presented his reserach on “the logic of the gift in shared leadership development,” theme developed in the his doctoral dissertation.  His presentation was followed by fruitful debate on the role of the leader’s team in the dynamic of engagement.

In short:

Many authors argue that the development of a leader identity is necessary in the exercise of leadership (Day & Harrison, 2007). This paper presents the main results of qualitative research demonstrating that the logic of the gift develops the leader’s identity. To guard against the risk of considering the leader as the only source of leadership and the followers only as receivers, we need to confirm the role of reception of the gift in the leadership relationship, and how the members give of themselves in return. We are now therefore exploring a new research question: is the logic of the gift an explanatory factor for the construction of a leadership relationship between leader and members ?

The symposium was organized by the research group HEIRS, the University of Sophia, SPES Europe and G.R.A.C.E.
